In a 1787 letter, Benjamin Franklin wrote, “only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” When I look at how so many conservatives and libertarians are reacting to COVID, it’s hard not to be reminded of Franklin’s words.
